What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Children turning 5 years old between September 2nd and December 2nd are considered transitional kindergarteners (TK). Transitional kindergarten is a two year program that acts as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten that gives students the opportunity to learn important academic and social/emotional skills in a way that supports their development. The first year of the TK program is considered the "transitional kindergarten" year. The second year of the program is classified as kindergarten.
The TK program is important because California's kindergarten standards have changed over the years, and many of the skills children were once taught in first grade are now expected in kindergarten. TK is a wonderful option that allows families to give their child the gift of time to develop at their own pace and continue building social, emotional, and academic skills that will help them succeed in school
Registration takes place at your child's neighborhood school. If you are unsure of what school you are zoned for please check the school locator below. Your school of residence will provide you with a packet of information that will have to be completed and turned in.
Shasta County is an open enrollment county, if you would like to enroll your child in a school within our district other than the one you are zoned for please inquire at the district office or at the front office of the school you wish to attend.
